Dr. David Gale (Kevin Spacey), einst ein geachteter Universitätsdozent und weithin populärer Kämpfer wider die Todesstrafe, ist selbst in der Todeszelle gelandet. Eine Kollegin wurde vergewaltigt und ermordet, Gales Samenspuren fand man in der Leiche. Journalistin Bitsy Bloom (Kate Winslet), zunächst überzeugt von Gales Schuld, wird auf den Fall angesetzt und führt mehrere Interviews mit dem Todeskandidaten. Danach ist sie sich der Sache nicht mehr so sicher...

 Does the death penalty still correspond with the values of today?

Professor David Gale and his friends from Deathwatch have fought a long time to convince people that it is not and should be abolished. Now he is a prisoner on Death Row himself. David Gale is accused of having raped and murdered his friend and fellow activist, Constance.

Four days before his execution Bitsey Bloom, a well-known journalist, gets the opportunity for an interview with David Gale who wants to tell the world that he is innocent. At first she thinks that he is guilty but when she interviews him, Bitsey Bloom is not so sure anymore. So she starts to investigate, looking for the truth.
The film is a good example to show that there are flaws in the legal system and it could change one’s point of view towards death penalty. A very good film with an excellent story and a great cast. Kate Winslet as Bitsey Bloom and Kevin Spacey as David Gale are perfectly chosen to play the main parts of the film.
